The abdication of Pedro I
Oil on canvas. Aurélio de Figueiredo. 1911.
April 7
Pedro I abdicates the Imperial Crown in favour of his son, Pedro II, and adopts the title of Duke of Bragança
The image of the Emperor gradually became compromised in Brazil. The level of financial indebtedness and quarrels between the Portuguese and Brazilians proved responsible for a sequence of unstable ministries and resulted in his abdication in favour of his son Pedro II (1831), then aged five: Those born in Brazil no longer want to know any more about me because I am Portuguese and my son has the advantage of being Brazilian.

The abdication of the Emperor was published in no. 145 of the Lisbon Gazette, 22 June 1831, Wednesday edition:

Abdication of the Emperor.

In accordance with the Right Granted to me by the Constitution, I Declare, that I do of my own voluntary will Abdicate in favour of My much Beloved and Cherished Son, Pedro de Alcantara.

Boa Vista, seventh of April of one thousand eight hundred and thirty one, the tenth of Independence and of Empire. = Pedro
