Pedro, Duke de Bragança, leaves Brazil and sets off for Europe in order to defend the rights of his daughter in the company of Amelia and Maria da Glória
Pedro left his four children from his marriage to Empress Leopoldine behind in Brazil and would never again see them. He nominated as their tutor José Bonifácio de Andrade e Silva. After passing through London, he established his residence in Paris, first in the Palace of Meudon and then on Rue de Courcelles.

On 12th April, he wrote a farewell letter, already on board the British carrack that was transporting him to Europe and published in no. 148 of the Lisbon Gazette, 25th June 1831, Saturday edition:

Lisbon, 24 June

(…)

Letter of farewell of the Emperor of Brazil

Due to the impossibility of addressing myself to each of my genuine friends in particular to bid my farewells and to thank them at the same time for all the deference that they have shown me and moreover to request pardon to all of those that I have somehow managed to cause offence to (…) I withdraw to Europe, already missing my Homeland, my Children and all of my true friends (…) Farewell Patria, farewell friends farewell forever.

On board the British ship Warspite, 12 April 1831.
