The matrimonial treaty between Pedro and Princess Amelia Augusta Eugenia Napoleona de Beauharnais is signed in Munich, Germany, by the Marquis of Barbacena
With the relationship between Pedro and Domitilia de Castro Canto e Melo, the Marquis of Santos, and their five children, in the meanwhile ended, it did not prove any easy take to arrange a new bride for Pedro among European royal families.
Amelia was the third daughter of Prince Eugene de Beauharnais, Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichsted and Santa Cruz, and Princess Augusta Amalia, daughter of Maximilian, King of Baviera. On her paternal side, Amelia was the daughter of Empress Josephine, first wife of Napoleon. Of extraordinary beauty, she married Pedro aged 17 and was left a widow aged 21. The marriage bore a single daughter. Amelia died in Lisbon, in the Palace of Janelas Verdes aged 60. Her sister Josephina, Queen of Sweden, was her main heir.
