Maria da Glória leaves Brazil for Europe
Accompanied by the Marquis Barbacena, Felisberto Caldeira Brant. On reaching Gibraltar on 3rd September 1828, they learned from an emissary of what had in the meanwhile happened in Portugal and the absolutist attitudes of Miguel. The Marquis of Barbacena, fearing that the travelling of Queen Maria II to Vienna, as had been planned, might compromise the liberal cause, opted to take her to Britain, where there were already many exiled liberals. In London, where she arrived on 7 October, the young, nine year old queen is received with the honours due her hierarchy.
