João VI dies in Lisbon in the Royal Palace of Bemposta
Pedro succeeded his father to the throne of Portugal as King Pedro IV. His sister, Isabel Maria, ensured the regency in his name.

The latest updates on the state of health of King João VI were issued by the publication of Bulletins issued by the Palace of Bemposta. The news of his death is given by no. 60 of the Lisbon Gazette, 11 March 1826, Saturday edition:

LISBON, 10 March

Frustrating all of our expectations! A fatal blow that launched the consternation of the Portuguese People! Our Beloved Sovereign, King João VI is no longer with us… The sharp pain that does oppress our heart and that shall plunge the entire Nation into heavy mourning, does not allow us release from the expressions that such a devastating event shall prove object.

News containing descriptions of the ceremonies taking place in Lisbon during the funeral of King João VI featured in no. 67 of the Lisbon Gazette, 20 March 1826, Monday edition:

LISBON, 19 March.

On Tuesday, 14th of this month, in a sad and eternal recollection of Portuguese Pomp, the Royal Body of His Highest and Most Powerful Emperor and King João VI, following his embalming, was put on display with the Insignias of Royalty in the Room of the Palace of Bemposta, destined for such purposes, and there, the Court, the Senior Officers and the Servants of the Royal Household, as well as other dignitaries belonging to the Ecclesiastic, Civil and Military classes, did kiss his Hand.
