Born in the Palace of São Cristóvão, in Rio de Janeiro, Francisca Carolina, sixth child of Pedro and Leopoldine
Aged 18, she married the Prince of Joinville, Francis Ferdinand d’Orléans, third son of King Louis Philippe I of France and Queen Maria Amalia de Bourbon-Naples. Known as “La belle Françoise”, she always maintained a close relationship with her brother, Pedro II, who referred to her “mana Chica” (sister chic). She died in Paris aged 73.

The news of the birth of the princess took place in no. 267 of the Lisbon Gazette, 11 November 1824, Thursday edition:

… On 2nd August at nine in the evening, HRH her excellency the Princess Royal Maria Leopoldine did give birth with every happiness to a healthy and bonny baby who was baptised on 10 August with the name of Francisca Carolina, Joanna, Carlota, Leopoldine dos Anjos, Romana, Xavier de Paula, Micaela, Gabriela, Gonzaga.
