The French painter was in Brazil between 1816 and 1831 where he finished a series of boards (engravings).

The news, which reached Lisbon via the voice of the captain of the Galera Lusitania that arrived from Rio de Janeiro, was reported in no. 306 of the Government Daily, 28 December 1822, Saturday edition:

On 12 October, the Royal Prince was acclaimed Emperor of Brazil.
