Following the I Stay (Fico) proclamation, Pedro takes a series of measures preparing the way for the emancipation of Brazil.

The I stay episode. Pedro promises to r in Brazil despite the orders to the contrary.
Pressured by the Courts of Lisbon wishing to reduce Brazil, in the meanwhile elevated to a United Kingdom with Portugal and the Algarves (1815), once again to the statute of a colony, King João VI orders the immediate return of Pedro to Portugal. His refusal and the declaration of the historical phrase: As it is for the good of all and the general happiness of the nation, I am ready: tell the people that I am staying!

The episode was reported in no. 83 of the Government Daily, 10 April 1822, Wednesday edition:

OVERSEAS 

Rio de Janeiro 9 January 1822

The Council Senate believes it its duty to announce to the People of this City that today, at midday, HRH the Prince Regent of Brazil did present the representation that the same Council did address to him and that HRH did dignify by duly addressing in providing the following response:

«Convinced that my presence in Brazil is indispensable to the good of the entire Portuguese Nation, and even required by some Provinces; I shall delay my departure from here until such point that the Courts and my august Lord Father do deliberate on this object in full knowledge of everything that has taken place.»
