The French painter was in Brazil between 1816 and 1831 where he finished a series of boards (engravings).

João VI acclaimed King in Rio de Janeiro
Ever since the death of his mother, Queen Maria I, on 20th March 1816, João took on governing as if king even while the coronation ceremony did only take place some two years later.

The coronation ceremony of King João VI in Rio de Janeiro was described in no. 112 of the Lisbon Gazette, 13 May, Wednesday edition:

UNITED KINGDOM OF PORTUGAL, BRAZIL, AND THE ALGARVES

Rio de Janeiro, 10 February

The Glorious Act of Coronation of João Sixth, Our August Sovereign, and Model of Monarchs of the Universe as announced in the preceding Gazette, shall today affix the most serious attentions of our Readers and be the attention of our narration (…).

In this Order of procession to the Royal Palace of Boa Vista, where there were His Majesty and Their Royal Highnesses. There, the proclamation was first read and after the cheerful acclamations did alternate with the national Anthem, they did duly proceed to return to the Court Palace, where they joined the Queen  Our Lady and Their August Daughters. They then did pass onto the main squares and streets of the City and encountering throughout the greatest of enthusiasm and the most lively pleasure of a people who do so cherish and adore their August Monarch.
