José Monteiro da Rocha nominated preceptor to the Prince of Beira and his siblings
The former Jesuit, mathematics, astronomer and Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra abandoned academic life to take up the position of preceptor to the princes. He did not accompany the Royal Family to Brazil and, in 1807, Friar António da Arrábida was nominated as tutor to Pedro.
This nomination is detailed in a letter dated 8th June 1804 that the Count of Vila Verde sent to J. Diogo de Barros Leitão Carvalhosa in the Palace of Queluz:
Ordered to ready a room for
the accommodation and residence of Dr. José Monteiro da Rocha, master to Prince
of Beira and his siblings.
