Death of Prince Francisco António Pio. Succeeded as heir to the throne by his brother Pedro, Prince of Beira
António, male first born of João and Carlota Joaquina fell victim to smallpox aged just six years of age. News report from the Supplement to No. 24 of the Lisbon Gazette, 19 June 1801:

LISBON 19 June.

Having fallen ill with smallpox on 30 May, His Excellency António, Prince of Beira, within a few days, reported the evil of terrible symptoms. On seeing all of his august siblings nevertheless recovered from the same ailment, it was a prognostic of some consolation; but unfortunately lasting but little time. As, thereafter, despite all recourse to the Art, the symptoms proved still more fearful and determined immediately that the Prince Regent, due to the effect of his great religious piety, united under singular paternal care, that implored upon Heaven for succour; and in consequence so did offer up public Prayers in all of the Churches of this Capital. However, it was not to the pleasing of Providence to hear such imploration, as, despite all of the hopes that such might prove fruitful, the best of life departed from HRH on the 11 of this month at half past eight in the evening at the age of 6 years, 2 months and 20 days. This great loss left his august Parents stricken with the greatest sadness not only for the tenderness and affection with which they loved the deceased Prince but also in knowing closely the rare qualities that he attained to such a great level in excess of his few years; even whilst in the midst of such vivid pain would he show yet new proof of his constant piety and suffering with a genuinely Christian resignation the blow then suffered that so also did afflict the remainder of the Royal Persons and all of the Court.
